INERTIA: New Lows To Bear Upon A Barren Heart: Cassette

inertia600x600

This New Jersey band started as a crust / hardcore side project featuring members of DEPARTURES and HOLLOW-EYED, now moves into the realm of politically charged power violence on their second release. Featuring guest vocals from members of GATHERER and IDES.

Kicking off with “Harvest”, a very powerful song that has the speed and manic energy that you’re looking for, but also has a slow dirge part that brings to mind later BLACK FLAG. Lots of shouting, guitar playing that is clean sounding amongst the fuzz and a general sense of insanity…nice opener. “Illiteracy Dyscalcula” is a super short and fast-paced song that has the shouted vocals, great background vocals and is nice and heavy. “It’s Not A Disease It’s a Lifestyle” keeps the hardcore energy going with a bit of a slower pace that goes into full on moshing. “Homelessness Blues” doesn’t have much blues in it, but it has that BLACK FLAG sound again, with its slow, dirge and shouted vocals mixed with the jazzy feel that FLAG had at the time. On the last song, “Before It All Went Black” starts off slowly with guitar and then the drums and the screamed vocals kick in and the song takes on a swirling, grinding, pummeling mixture that made it a very cool ending to the album.

A very hard-hitting and powerful release that will get lodged in your boombox and won’t come out for days. The mixture of the BLACK FLAG style and their own sound really made for a great listen and makes me glad that I still have a tape player, this brings me back to the good old days.

NO QUALMS: Hyenas: 7″

No Qualms - Hyenas EP cover art

This is some really crazed hardcore / fast core blended with power violence that will slam you against the wall and keep you there until the single is over, luckily at around twelve minutes, you aren’t stuck there all day, unless you have this on repeat that is.

Hyenas is one wild ride and I didn’t want it to stop, I mean, you get super rough vocals, crazed drumming, guitar wailing like crazy and the bass just pounding away to create a cacophony of glorious noise that I had to play it again. Such a powerful and intense single with an amazing amount of energy running throughout the eight songs in around six minutes and some change, that this is one that you will put on repeat and start a pit up in your house.

This Florida band really shines on this single, now I have to go and find more music by them so I can get my fix until they put out some more tunes.

ACxDC / SEX PRISONER / MAGNUM FORCE: Split 10″

This is one brutal and wild split single with three bands playing as hard and fast as they can, powerviolence, grind, and hardcore all ripping up the grooves and shredding your face. Super short songs that are relentless in their devastating power and crazed enough to scare the normals.

ACxDC, otherwise known as ANTICHRIST DEMONCORE have been at it since 2003 and show no sign of slowing down or giving into whatever music trend comes around. Devastatingly hard and fast hardcore with power violence and a touch of grind, taking you out and kicking the shit out of you. Their five songs are well produced, meaning that you can hear everything relatively clear through the racket they make. That racket is what makes them stand out from the pack, great concise blasts of crazed music the makes you want to punch something, because punching somebody would be wrong. MAGNUM FORCE are next with three songs over brutally fast powerviolence that fit perfectly after ACxDC’s song with just a touch less production and a bit more demo sounding, but still wildly good songs, and we have SEX PRISONER with five songs of bass heavy powerviolence that is a bit muddy sounding with the bass turned up so high and the vocals being buried in the mix, but they slam through their songs with energy and anger which carried them into a crazy good time.

This is one of those releases that won’t convert anyone, but if you’re a fan of these bands or the style that they play, it will be one that you will have to get. Crank it up, grab your favorite drink and hit the pit, a good time is in store for you.
