ORANGE GOBLIN: Back From The Abyss: CD

Like your heavy metal raw and dirty? Then you’re gonna dig this kick-ass album. Orange Goblin are about to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band, but first, this London, England based act is releasing its eighth studio album.

Starting off with the superb “Sabbath Hex” is a hell of a way to start things off with its immediate and rollicking introduction to the album with great riffs and catchy lyrics. “Heavy Lies The Crown” starts off sounding like a stoner friendly song from the ’70s before turning into a huge riff-filled song. Ben’s gravelly vocals add so much to the growing heaviness of the track. “The Devil’s Whip” was the first single released by the band from this album and it is a killer rock’n’roll number that gets better the more you listen to it. “Into The Arms of Morpheus” slowly turns into a bluesy jam session that gets your head bobbing and makes you get out your air guitar to plat along. “Mythical Knives” has a quiet intro that slowly builds up into a bruiser of a tune that hits you square in the head. “Bloodzilla” is a fast one that just comes at you full tilt and knocks you on your ass, and keeps you down with the awesome power riffs and insane drumming. “Übermensch” has power and energy to spare and added to the gruff vocals, makes for a track that you just can’t get enough of. “Demon Blues” starts off with great riffing, terrific drumming and demonic vocals that turns into a spooky, but heavy as hell track that would rip your head off live. The rest of the album is chock full of hooks and riffs that once you put it on, you will have them cranked up and blowing your speakers.

If you’re a fan then you know what you are getting, but if you are new…wow, this is the real deal here! No glossy ballads, no guitar wanking, no lovey-dovey syrup in the lyrics, just a good, ass-kicking album, one you will be playing a whole lot.

HAVOK: UNNATURAL SELECTION: CD

In the nine years since their started, this Denver-based thrash band have already turned out two fairly successful albums and have gone on to worldwide acclaim as one of the metal acts to watch for. Their latest release, Unnatural Selection, cracked the Billboard Top 200 list in its first week and solidified Havok as a solid player in the metal field.

Opener “I Am the State” rages with anger, the riffs have heft and intensity and the simple chorus hits hard. “Give Me Liberty…or Give Me Death” kills with in-your-face, razor-sharp riffing, and timely lyrics. “Worse Than War” has a killer lead riff and sticks in your head. Some other songs that stood out were “Is It True?,” “Chasing the Edge,” and the BLACK SABBATH cover of “Children of the Grave.” As musicians, they are first-rate with David Sanchez and Reece Scruggs playing the hell out of their guitars, new bassist Michael Leon with his rumbling lines, and Pete Webber smashing away behind the kit. Sanchez is a good thrash vocalist, and his cleaner style on here really adds to the power of the music with the lyrics being clearer.

The lyrical content is what really gets me about this record, and most of all. it’s a pretty focused effort lyrically. It’s great to hear lyrics that actually took some thought to write. The whole record is well-thought out and really put together down to the last detail.

ORANGE GOBLIN: A Eulogy For The Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012: CD

Twelve live songs, warts and all, bum notes, forgotten lyrics and lots of crowd noise make up this live release from ORANGE GOBLIN who have been around since 1995 and finally listened to the fans request for this live album.

This is like a non-stop party that I didn’t want to end; the band was totally on fire on this live album with some blisteringly good versions of their songs. They have some blues mixed in with their mix of hard rock and heavy metal and the vocals have a little Lemmy from MOTORHEAD mixed in as well. With live albums, you hope that they won’t suck, this does not suck, and it’s one of the better live albums that I’ve heard in a very long time. Not all prettied up, production work that sounds like you are there with them and a ton of awesome songs…crank this one up! The band plays tight, with the vocals mixed in well, nothing is buried in the mix and I couldn’t pick out one song that I liked more than the rest, it’s that good.

This is one of the few live albums that you will want to play over and over again, especially in summer, outside with some beer and this cranked up.
